How Much Sugar Do Americans Consume Daily? (Hint: Way Too Much)

Americans eat way too much sugarPhoto: NYC.gov

In a country where candy displays are perched next to cash registers at every retail outlet imaginable and drinking soda is a birthright, it can hardly be surprising that Americans consume a large amount of sugar. But 22 teaspoons a day? That's hard to swallow.

Yet the statistic is true. U.S. adults consume 22.2 teaspoons of sugar daily -- or 355 calories, reports UPI. That wildly exceeds the daily recommended amount, says Phil Lempert, a food industry analyst. He says average-sized women should be consuming no more than 6.25 teaspoons; men 9.4.

Not only is the sugar bad for your waistline, but diets high in the sweet stuff have been shown to contribute to high blood pressure, increased triglycerides and cardiovascular disease, the American Heart Association says.

As is usually the case with dietary matters, a little moderation goes a long way.

Ribolla Gialla + Cherry Chapstick = Yo La Tengo!

(Always did love that Genius + Love = Yo La Tengo compilation.) There’s a growing number of California winemakers working at the margins of the current industry to produce truly distinctive wines, and some of these fine folks have chosen to work with ribolla gialla, a variety that hails from the northeastern corner of Italy. 2010 Germany - Monchoff and Christoffel

So now the story gets to be told of my German adventure. Blow by blow. So after my bag gets stolen and we filed the police report we get the rental car and decide to drive 3hrs in the wrong direction because the GPS was not even remotely close to being accurate. I remember sitting in the car in front of the JJ Prum estate the next day and punching the address in and it telling me we were 560 km away. Ridiculous. But we got by on borrowed GPS's thanks to the kindess of Jakob Schneider, Justin Christophe and Danielle and finally Stefan Steinmetz's fiance, the lovely Sammie. So it was GPS musical chairs and I now am an expert on the ubiquitous TomTom, which is the preferred brand in Germany. So after missing our appointment with JJ Prum (don't fret, I tasted them the next day and well, they are well worth discussing) and our *** Michelin meal at Sonnora we finally arrive at Monchoff at 8:30 PM. I landed at 10:55 and we left Frankfurt airport at 1:30 PM. Oh yeah, travel follies galore.

The next morning we had an unreal breakfast and were ready to taste with Robert Eymael. They de-acidified at the estate but the wines remain clean, classic examples of the Mosel style. The higher pradikat Auslesen from both estates were excellent.

And sorry for the only few pictures as the camera was in my stolen bag.

2010 Monchoff Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Kabinett Trocken - I love this category as getting the balance right is often tricky as RS is low and acid is high, and to pull it off right and then afte that to pull it off right without it being biting. Among the most obtuse German wines I have ever had are Kabinett Trockens. This was not obtuse. Crisp, juicy, mineral with nice snap and slight roundness that only detracts a tiny bit. Good tension and fruit expression.

2010 Monchoff Urziger Wurzgarten Spatlese Feinherb #33 - This was a feinherb highlight in 2009. Very good in 2010 but not up to the 2009. Lovely purity and cleanliness with a juicy, mineral thing going on in the mouth. Seems a little constructed.

2010 Monchoff Estate Riesling - Always solid year in and year out and 2010 is no exception. Great intro wine for little cash into the fruity Mosel style.

2010 Monchoff Urziger Wurzgarten Kabinett - Showing really well that morning. Spicy, juicy and mouthwatering. The acids were really on point in this wine.

2010 Monchoff Urziger Wurzgarten Spatlese - Voluminous on the palate with big spice and fruit. Easy, fun and cheerful Spatlese. Excellent purity again.

2010 Monchoff "Slate" Spatlese - This is 100% Erdener Treppchen fruit. Touch drier than the Wurzgarten. Very refined with cooling blue raspberry and blueberry fruit. Snappy acidity and great earthy minerality and a ton of slatiness as the title implies.

2010 Christoffel Erdner Treppchen Riesling Spatlese - Blueberry and raspberry jump out of the glass along with major slate. Very clean and incredible purity on the palate. A touch closed on the backend.

2010 Christoffel Erdener Treppchen Auslese** - Always a great bottle, regardless of vintage. This was fantastic and I must declare, for pradikat wines, Auslese is certainly the sweet spot in the Middle Mosel as my tasting notes will concur. High acid, high must weight and little, but very clean botrytis always translate to excellent Auslesen. Rich, ripe, honeyed and round with excellent cling and grip. An Auslese that can be a guilty pleasure to drink young. So luscious.

2010 Monchoff Erdener Pralat Auslese - Pralat is a personal favorite vineyard and this bottle is out of this world. Incredible purity and all that exotic Pralat fruit.High acid give this great focus and definition. Phenomenal length and super clean botrytis. Will last 30-40 years.

2010 Christoffel Urziger Wurzgarten Auslese*** - Just profound Auslese. Big, rich, spicey with extra clingy and tense acids. Best wine of the morning.

Do Consumers Even Like Barolo?

Above: Which way Barolo? A signpost at an overlook in La Morra showing the distance to neighboring communes. So, do consumers even like Barolo? It’s a sad question to ask if you’re a nebbiolo obsessive, but I think there’s some truth to it. Outside of the wine trade, it seems like most people just don’t [...]

1stdibs.com at the NY Design Center

When 1stdibs.com went from click to brick, it was an overnight success, far beyond what was expected. Until the opening of its new home 1stdibs.com was only online. It was the luxury marketplace site for antique and vintage design from the United States, Canada, France, and England. In other words, a treasure trove of jewelry, lighting, furniture, antiquities and especially design classics that you could buy online. Now 1stdibs has expanded to bricks and mortar. Some 53 dealers occupy a huge 1stdibs space on the 10th floor of the New York Design Center in Midtown Manhattan on Lexington Avenue between 32nd and 33rd streets. With the expansion from virtuality to reality, the new 1stdibs@NYDC is a big hit with designers as well as the general public. The Design Center, which in the past was to-the-trade, decorators only, is now open to the general public even on Saturday.
